Principal:
Melissa Gonzales was born and raised in East San Jose. As the first in her family to graduate from college, opening KIPP San Jose Collegiate is a way for Melissa to ensure that her students have access to the same opportunities she did in high school. In 2001, she graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a Bachelor’s of Art in Latin American and Iberian Studies. Immediately following graduation, Melissa joined Teach for America where she taught 6th grade English Language Arts at Prescott Middle School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. After teaching for three years at her placement school in Baton Rouge, she decided to return home to San Jose, California to teach at KIPP Heartwood Academy, a KIPP school serving families in her old neighborhood of East San Jose. At KIPP. Melissa was the founding English teacher and 6th grade level chair. In the school’s second year, she was asked to lead the high school for KIPP Heartwood. In 2005, Melissa was awarded the KIPP Fisher Fellowship and has spent the last two years preparing to open an excellent high school for her students in August 2008.
