Commitment to Excellence

Student success at KIPP schools requires a partnership between parents, students, and teachers that puts learning first. In order to join the KIPP team and family, all three parties are required to sign the “Commitment to Excellence,” which ensures that each will do whatever it takes to make achievement possible.

Academics

KIPP Summit Academy correlates our curriculum objectives to the California Content Standards adopted by the California State Board of Education. The school’s focus is not to change what the state feels are appropriate academic outcomes, but rather to ensure that all students master all areas of the California Content Standards. Teachers work with the School Leader to determine the curricula that best match student needs. Incoming student needs and performance levels determine the weight that teachers place on different elements of the curriculum. The school’s expectation is to accelerate student learning to ensure that mastery of the state standards is achieved at a faster pace. An accelerated pace is necessary to prepare students for the rigorous and challenging curriculum they will encounter in high school Honors and Advanced Placement programs. This is accomplished by having a longer school day, week, and year.

KIPP Summit Academy combines the California Content Standards with the pedagogical methodologies that have proven successful in established KIPP schools. The state standards are supplemented in the following ways: character education, extra-curricular activities, technology, and community service. Clear and specific academic objectives are mastered at each grade level as students move through the curriculum at KIPP Summit Academy’s intensified pace.

The content of the KIPP Summit Academy curriculum focuses on the necessary remediation of basic skills, when applicable coupled with an emphasis on higher order thinking processes in all content areas. In accordance with state regulations, KIPP Summit Academy provides the standard age-appropriate curriculum for Mathematics, Science, English-Language Arts, History-Social Science, and Visual-Performing Arts at each grade level. These courses are supplemented by KIPP Summit Academy’s enrichment classes that provide extra time for critical thinking skills and advanced curriculum, including eighth-grade Algebra in preparation for entering the Honors/AP track at college preparatory high school programs.

Character

Our teachers work with students to develop good character in addition to important academic skills necessary to be successful in college and beyond. To promote this development, teachers implement a common behavior management system, and practice team and family values of the school. Additionally, students have access to on-site counseling services.

Student leadership opportunities at KIPP Summit Academy include participating in student council, honor council, ambassador program, social justice week, and community outreach projects. A few of the many activities offered at KIPP Summit Academy include school dances, student fundraisers, orchestra concerts, contributing to the literary magazine, and digital storytelling.
